Explore IU: Every Contact Leaves a Trace  (4:00 pm.)

Forensic chemistry and forensic biology, illicit drugs and DNA are highly mentioned; but what about all the other stuff, like fibers, hairs, glass, soil, explosives, and paint chips. These types of evidence belong to the trace category of evidence, when there is a small amount of evidence that the examiner is trying to identify and may be linked to a source, comparing similar trace materials for unique features. According to the National Institute of Justice, Trace Evidence can be transferred between people, objects or the environment during a crime and can be used to link a suspect to a victim or a crime scene. This is known as Locard’s Exchange Principle which states that any time two items come into contact with each other, information is exchanged; “Every contact leaves a trace”. This session will explore commonly seen trace evidence in a forensic laboratory and what information can be discovered and what tools are used to unmask the truth about the evidence.

This sample class led by Professor Steven Savino offers a white board approach to positioning and managing consumer-directed brands for economic success. Savino has 25 years of experience as a professional marketer and extensive teaching experience.

The Art of Algorithms: Divide-and-Conquer (Virtual Sample Class) (6:00 pm.)

Algorithms are at the heart of everything from connecting your cell phone to a tower, to scheduling professional sports leagues, to piloting aircraft, and everything in between. Designing elegant and clever algorithms is an important skill that turns out to be half-science and half-art. This class will present an actual, self-contained lecture on the “divide-and-conquer” method and how it is used to solve fascinating problems. The format will be interactive and collaborative, but no particular programming, math, or algorithms background is needed to enjoy the topic. The professor will be Dr. Cole Smith, Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Following the class portion, Dean Smith will be available to answer questions about the College of Engineering and Computer Science in general and about algorithms, too, if there is interest. We will encourage you to enable your audio and video to engage with us and ask questions.
