Leaders and organizers in the making!

Cristina Lares
Elementary Teacher

Friday afternoons during virtual weeks, 3C students plan virtual activities to share with friends. Student join a Zoom account at 4 30 pm and participate on cooking classes and Netflix parties. Sometimes they extend the invitation to parents and siblings who are always welcome to join.

These activities are organized with the help of our 3C class representative Benjamin Mancera. Together students propose activities, discuss strategies in order to turn ideas into actions and are in charge of leading their activity. These activities are not only fun and allow them to share activities beyond academics, but they are also developing essential life skills. They plan activities, discuss with respect, arrive to agreements, experience being on the spotlight and lead activities among peers. Beware! Leaders and organizers in the making.

In the picture you can see Jacinta W., Gabriela B., Maria Paz O., Sofía M. y Cristina Lares  making chocolate covered strawberries.

Third grade
Math teachers

One of the ways to get students more challenged and excited about learning math is to explore math outside the classroom in the real world. The change of scenery enhances enthusiasm and allows students to learn math and outdoor skills at the same time. Students are able to comprehend that nature is full of mathematical structures, patterns, and shapes.

In 3rd grade, students have been studying addition and subtraction of fractions with concrete activities in which they can not only directly interact with what fractions are and represent, but also have fun learning outdoors and with nature.

The pictures in the article show an exploration task in which students were asked to make a video explaining how to subtract fractions with rocks, flowers, leaves or anything they could find outdoors. They experienced that math is around them and can be fun, practical and very close. They could also discover that math opens opportunities to be easily creative.

These activities allow teachers to see what and how students are thinking and to determine in which stage of the understanding process they are. Teachers can also determine how students apply what they know and go beyond their previous and current knowledge to generate new understandings.

AP Seminar – Global Challenges Conference

On Tuesday, 2nd of February, 2021, the two Grade 10 AP Seminar classes successfully presented their Team Multimedia Presentation (TMP) on their chosen global challenges. This conference was both an assessment of their work in the AP Capstone program and a celebration of their impressive effort and achievements. This process commenced back in October 2020 when students formed their groups, identified their chosen global issue or problem, then devised their group’s research question and varied approaches.

Students then worked on their own Individual Research Report (IRR) by focusing on a specific lens or perspective surrounding their group’s issue. After completing the extensive research and writing process, groups came together to collaborate, sharing all their individual findings to transform their collective knowledge into creating a team solution for their global problem. Students utilised multiple skills including argumentation, critical and higher-order thinking, public speaking, and visual and multimedia design skills. Finally, they were required to answer Oral Defense (OD) questions about their team’s collaboration and process. The AP Capstone team, including the teacher librarians, want to congratulate all teams for their truly engaging, meaningful, and dynamic presentations.
